Serpentine Pavilion 2013: Sou Fujimoto's Visionary Design Takes Shape in Hyde Park

Official Opening Marks Public Debut of Cloud-Like Structure

Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto's concept of blending nature and architecture comes to life in Hyde Park London

On Thursday, June 20, 2013, the much-anticipated official opening of the Serpentine Pavilion by Sou Fujimoto took place in the heart of Hyde Park, London. The event marked the first time the public could experience firsthand the unique and visionary design by the renowned Japanese architect.

In the lead-up to the opening, Fujimoto had shared his inspiration and design process at a live Public Talk on June 8, 2013. He explained how he sought to create a structure that seamlessly integrated with its natural surroundings, echoing the organic forms and open spaces found in a forest.

Occupying 350 square meters of serene lawn at the forefront of the Serpentine Gallery, Fujimoto's delicate structure captures the essence of a cloud. Its light and airy form is achieved through a grid of fine steel columns, supporting a translucent roof of white fabric. The effect is both ethereal and inviting, creating a space that feels both private and open.

In a film by film studio StephensonBishop, Fujimoto eloquently describes his intention to combine nature and architecture, creating a pavilion that would "become a part of the summer landscape of Hyde Park."

Another film, captured by Dezeen at the unveiling of the Pavilion, offers insights into Fujimoto's use of a rigid geometric framework, which he employed to create a sense of fluidity and transparency. The result is a structure that appears almost weightless, floating above the ground.
